BACK FEED5000 3'2m?f Feeding the 5000 with 5 loaves & a few memories GRAMPS - (enters, wearing old sweater and granny glasses, shuffles DC, struggles to sit in chair, covers lap with blanket, closes eyes, lays head back as if soaking up the sun, sighs) TOMMY -- (enters, crosses to DC, talks into his ear) Morning, Gramps. GRAMPS - (without opening his eyes) Mornin', Tommy. TOMMY -- Mom sent me out to see if you need anything. Can I get you anything? (Prays silently, mouthing "Say no") GRAMPS - No, thanks, Tommy. (sighs) TOMMY -- (rejoices silently, sneaks toward exit, smiling) GRAMPS - You know, Tommy, this beautiful morning reminds of the day I saw Jesus feed a great big mob of people with just a little tiny bit of food. Did I ever tell you about that? TOMMY -- (disappointed, under his breath) Not more than 2 or 3 dozen times, grandpa. GRAMPS - I'll never forget it. TOMMY -- I wouldn't count on that. GRAMPS - Huh? What say? Speak up child! TOMMY -- I said, I can hardly wait to hear about it, grandpa. GRAMPS - I'll never forget it. We went out to see Jesus on the banks of the Dead Sea. TOMMY -- It was the Sea of Galilee. GRAMPS - Yeah, I saw Jesus and his disciples walk up and... TOMMY -- They were in a boat, grandpa. GRAMPS - Uh huh. As soon as he stepped out of the boat, people came from everywhere. We just mobbed him. Must have been hundreds of us. TOMMY -- There were 5000 people, grandpa. GRAMPS - Okay. (laughs) Anyways, Jesus sits down and starts telling jokes and having a good time... TOMMY -- He healed the sick and preached the gospel. GRAMPS - Yeah, that too, then about noon... TOMMY -- It was dinner time. GRAMPS - Yeah, the time really flew by. Anyways, Jesus was going to send the people away to find food, but... TOMMY -- The apostles wanted to send them away. I was Jesus who... GRAMPS - Like I said, the apostles were going to send the people away to find food, but Jesus decided to feed them. How am I doing? TOMMY -- I'm spellbound, grandpa. GRAMPS - Wait til you hear this. A little old lady offered Jesus her lunch. TOMMY -- It was a little boy. GRAMPS - Like I said, he took this little boy's lunch. I can see it clear as crystal. The lunch had only 2 small loaves of whole wheat bread... TOMMY -- There were five small barley muffins. GRAMPS - Uh huh, and 5 small pieces of beef jerky... TOMMY -- 2 little smoked herring. GRAMPS - Anyways, Jesus had the people sit down in groups of 10 or 20... TOMMY -- 50 or 100. GRAMPS - Yeah. Jesus gave thanks to the Lord and passed out the lunch among the thousands of people. Now, here's my favorite part. This is so clear to me after all this time. Jesus had the apostles collect the leftover pieces of bread and fish, and guess what? TOMMY -- I can't imagine. GRAMPS - The leftover pieces filled up a basket. TOMMY -- 12 baskets. GRAMPS - Like I said, there was more leftovers than he started with. Isn't that a great story, child? TOMMY -- And you tell it so well, grandpa. GRAMPS - Seems like it was just yesterday. TOMMY -- It was yesterday, grandpa. Mom and I were there with you, remember? GRAMPS - Oh. (pause) Did I ever tell you about the time I saw Jesus feed a great big mob of people with a little tiny bit of food? TOMMY -- (exiting) Gee, look at the time, grandpa. And I haven't started any of my chores yet. GRAMPS - (shouts) Remind me to tell you about it. (stands, shuffles toward exit) Now that I think about it, I'll bet your mother hasn't heard this story yet. I think I'll go in and tell her. She'll get a big kick out of this story, for sure.
