BACK TOOBIG 4'?m4f Discipleship, ministry, "I am the Vine" (scene: a large appliance box marked MINISTRY) AMY -- (enters opposite making notes on clipboard, circles appliance box, making notes, looks to Heaven, deep breath) LIZ -- (enters carrying shoe box marked MINISTRY, notices larger box, gasps) Wow! Look at the size of that ministry! Who does that belong to?! AMY -- It's mine. LIZ -- Wow! I thought my ministry was big! There's no way you can handle a ministry that big all by yourself! AMY -- You're right. LIZ -- So, where is everybody? AMY -- Everybody. LIZ -- You know, where's all the people in your ministry team? AMY -- I'm it, for now. LIZ -- You're not serious! AMY -- Why wouldn't I be serious? LIZ -- You took on a ministry that big without anybody on your team? AMY -- That's right. LIZ -- You're crazy! AMY -- Why am I crazy? LIZ -- You can't start a ministry that big without anybody on your team! It's too big for one person. AMY -- Well, you're right about that. LIZ -- But you don't seem terribly worried. AMY -- I'm not. LIZ -- You should be. That ministry is so big it will bury you. AMY -- I doubt it. LIZ -- How can you be so calm? There's no way you can do that ministry by yourself! AMY -- I'm not doing it by myself. LIZ -- But you said.... AMY -- I said I didn't have anybody else. But that doesn't mean I'm alone. Every ministry starts out with two people. LIZ -- Two people. AMY -- Well, if this ministry is from God, he's my partner. LIZ -- That sounds pretty arrogant. AMY -- I'm just claiming promises from scripture. LIZ -- What promises? AMY -- Second Corinthians 3:5 "Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God." LIZ -- Oh. So, you think that holds true even for a small ministry like mine? (offers shoe box) AMY -- It HAS to. LIZ -- What do you mean, it HAS to? AMY -- Well, even if I'm doing the ministry and people refer to it as MY ministry, it's not really mine. LIZ -- Whose is it? AMY -- According to Jesus, it belongs to him. LIZ -- How can you say that? AMY -- He said in John 15:5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." LIZ -- Oh. So, what you're saying is, if I'm doing my ministry without relying on Jesus, I'm making a mistake? AMY -- A big mistake. LIZ -- But if I do my ministry relying on Jesus, doesn't he get all the credit? AMY -- Well, you get SOME credit. LIZ -- What credit do I get? AMY -- You get credit for trusting Him. LIZ -- Oh. Well, I still don't know how this works. You have a huge ministry. How are you going to get it moving? AMY -- I ASK for help. LIZ -- From who? AMY -- From the vine. LIZ -- You mean, you pray. AMY -- That's right. I was just writing down my prayer list and praying for my needs when you came along. LIZ -- Then what? AMY -- Then nothing. LIZ -- Nothing. AMY -- "Be still and know that I am God" LIZ -- I don't buy it. I have a small ministry but I feel like I have to DO something. But you.... AMY -- "Be still and know that I am God" LIZ -- And that works?! AMY -- If it's God's ministry it works. LIZ -- I doubt it. SUE -- (enters with Pat) Wow! You've sure got a big ministry there. PAT -- (enters with Sue) We were just talking about getting involved in a ministry. SUE -- Yes. We were. PAT -- Can we help you with this ministry? AMY -- (smiles to Liz) Sure! Thank God you're here! (Pat and Sue lift box, carry it offstage) AMY -- (follows) LIZ -- Excuse me? AMY -- (stops, turns) Yes. LIZ -- What was that Bible verse again? AMY -- John 15:5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." (exits) LIZ -- (follows) Boy. Ain't that the truth! ©2007 Bob Snook.
